If you’re ready to learn how to relieve pain simply and effectively without using force or repetitive exercises, this is for you. Ortho-Bionomy bodywork offers gentle, natural, lasting pain relief. It reconnects you with your body’s innate ability to relieve tension, pain and stress and restore wellbeing. Your body re-learns what it knew in childhood: fluid posture, comfortable movement and freedom from pain.

Ortho-Bionomy was developed by British-trained osteopath and Judo instructor from Canada, Arthur Lincoln Pauls. Pauls was inspired during his osteopathic training to develop techniques that would use less force, initiating change with less ‘input’ from the practitioner. Ortho-Bionomy is based on principles of non-force, non-judgement, less is more and allowing the body to change at its own pace. By doing less ‘to’ your body we allow it to find its own way back to authentic wellbeing, which is everybody’s birthright.

During Ortho-Bionomy sessions the practitioner gently moves your body into comfortable positions to facilitate softening of muscle tension. This supports a feeling of safety, ease and relaxation which allows your nervous system to switch out of fight/flight and into rest/reset. You’ll receive a ‘toolkit’ of self-care techniques you can use in daily life to further reduce your pain, tension and stress. You’ll learn to take more opportunities to help your body – and yourself – feel good, recognising this as your body’s ‘yes’ message and prioritising this in every area of your life.

When you work with me, I support you to be your own wellbeing expert. By connecting with our body’s self-healing intelligence there is no need for forceful manipulations, ‘cracking’ of joints or deep pressure on painful ‘trigger points’. There’s no longer a place for the old mindset of ‘this hurts or feels bad but he/she is the expert so I’ll put up with it’. Instead my highest priority is that you feel safe while we work together, letting your body be the guide. It’s when we work in partnership to discover what works best for you that you get the most benefit – including relief of pain and tension, better sleep, easier, more fluid movement, more energy for work and play, more self-compassion and understanding of how to listen to and take care of your body. Perhaps the best part is that this gentle way of working with your body addresses all levels of your being – physical, emotional, mental, energetic. It helps release the ‘charge’ or stress stored in your body – in your cells – from negative emotions and memories which are often the real source of our physical pain and tension – all without having to talk about it. This means you can leave behind the distress and lingering influence of those experiences without needing to revisit them verbally. Research shows that working with the body to create relaxation and a feeling of safety helps people recover from negative experiences better than talk-therapy alone.

You can use this noninvasive bodywork and associated self-care techniques pre- and post exercise and to support these and similar conditions:

Many acute injuries or short-term issues can be addressed with only a few sessions. I prefer to see clients for a minimum of three sessions to allow time to customise the approach to your individual needs. Changes are initiated in each session and your body completes the process in the days following. You will notice your body adjusting, shifting and correcting for 2-3 days after the session. I will structure follow-up sessions based on my observations and your comments when you report back at each visit. For chronic conditions you may need more sessions. Together we can tailor a program to suit your needs and budget. I’ll give you a ‘toolkit’ of self-care techniques for you to use between sessions to speed up your progress.

Ortho-Bionomy is a fully integrative therapy so it will support and complement any other treatments you may be having. It’s good to allow 2-3 days after your Ortho-Bionomy session before having other treatments so your body can respond to the work we do in your session. If you have too many different bodywork treatments at the same time it can be hard to know what is giving you the most benefit, so it’s a good idea to take a break from one for a few weeks while you try another.
